Mediterranean decor and good addresses in Marseille: meet Fifi Mandirac

Stéphanie was the ray of sunshine on our arrival in Marseille. When we met her over coffee, the conversation soon focused on patterns and colors, our shared passions. It was therefore only natural that we entrusted her with the installation and decoration of our pop-up at Marianne Cat in Marseille.

From her career as a graphic designer to interior decorator, as well as her favorite addresses in Marseille, a sunny and inspired encounter with Stéphanie.

Stéphanie, tell us about your career path: how did you become an interior designer?

When I went to art school, after the two-year core curriculum, I had to choose between Graphic Arts and Interior Architecture for the remaining 3 years of my studies. I chose Graphic Arts because I thought I didn't like construction sites. What followed proved me wrong! Fortunately, I love graphic design too. After a few years in an agency, I decided to create my own brand under the name Fifi Mandirac. I developed a graphic, colorful universe with lots of patterns. That's why I find myself in Jamini! As I'm developing Fifi Mandirac professionally, I have personal renovation projects that the press is raving about as well. I have to say that my interiors have greatly contributed to the success of Fifi Mandirac.

Our first renovation was of a large workshop on the courtyard, where everything had to be redone, including a large 45m2 skylight. People thought we were crazy, and I have to admit that if we'd known what we were getting into, we would have thought twice about it. But that's when I discovered that I love building sites! So it wasn't long before we had another project, this time for a house with a garden, then apartments for friends, and finally a pied-à-terre in Marseille where I would eventually want to stay. It was at this point that I created Mars Avril, an interior architecture and decoration firm. And almost immediately, I had the best project ever: clients wanted to entrust me with a "surprise project", and my mission was to redesign 100m2, supervise the work and take care of the smallest details, right down to the teapot in the cupboards. They didn't want to know anything about it, so it would be a complete surprise when they came to spend their vacations there. It was really exciting! The customers were delighted. And it freed me from my impostor complex: up until then I found it hard to present myself as anything other than a graphic designer. Things are better now! Since then, I've been working on a steady stream of projects, mostly for private individuals. But I have to admit that I fantasize a bit about a global project, one where I'd have to take care of both the venue and the graphic identity!

What excites you most about your job as a decorator?

The constraints that stimulate my creativity. I also love the moment when, once the work is finished, I come in to dress the room, i.e. to add objects, accessories, in a word everything that will bring whimsy and personality to the place.

What's your first approach when decorating a room?

I often start by removing what doesn't fit, what's knock-off, anachronistic or not authentic... Once that's done, I listen to the place itself and to the needs of the person who's going to live in it. It's the end of the thread that I pull and the rest comes by itself!

Your favorite textile piece

I love cushions! On their own and in no time at all, they can change the mood of a room. I like to mix colors and patterns so that they answer to each other, a little like paintings on a wall.

As a woman entrepreneur, what's your biggest daily challenge?

I've been an entrepreneur for so long that it's become my second nature. I love the autonomy, the freedom and the surprises it brings. For a long time, I had to be careful that it didn't encroach on my personal time, but over time I think I've managed that pretty well... My biggest challenge is to manage to show my projects, because once they're finished, they don't belong to me anymore!

Your favorite Jamini piece

I'm a fan of the Banna blue print, both as a cushion and a tablecloth. And I can't wait to get my hands on a market bag made from recycled nylon threads!

Your favorite restaurant in Marseille

We eat so well in Marseille! I really like Caterine and Razzia. Both on rue Fontange, right next door to me.

Your favorite place in Marseille to take a breather

My terrace! All day long, depending on the season, I find a spot to enjoy the sun or the shade. As soon as the weather allows it, I start my day there by having breakfast. I like to look after the many plants that have flourished. The previous owners warned me that everything grows here... But it's also a place for parties!

Your favorite decorating store in Marseille

A great classic: Maison Empereur! I also love the brocante Joli Rouge on rue d'Aubagne. I recently found a magnificent red Plona armchair by Giancarlo Piretti.

Your favorite swimming spot

Le Cercle des Nageurs. I like to go there for laps, it's a bit of a meditation for me... And afterwards I like to swim in the sea, or just dry off in the sun. When there's no wind, it's possible all year round. Even on December 31st!
